Now let’s try a chord using three fingers of the left hand.

This will be the D Major Chord (also just called the D chord.)

Place the index finger of your left hand to the second fret of the G string (the forth string away from your eyes and the third highest, third thinnest string).
Place your ring finger in the third fret of the next highest string (the B string or second thinnest).
Place your middle finger in the second fret of the highest, thinnest string, the upper E string, or just the E string. (See diagram).
Press down firmly with these three fingers.

Drag your pick or thumb of your right hand across all except the lower E string (the lower E sound does not go with this chord). Experiment with playing this loudly or softly and going back and forth with your right hand.

Now lift your fingers from the fretboard and play the E minor chord again.

Then play the D chord again. Practice switching back and forth between chords.

Do not get discouraged if you feel slow and the notes are fuzzy. No one is a virtuoso the first time they pick up a guitar, but believe me, this is the easiest way to learn.

Let your fingers of your left hand have a little break.
