Let’s do another one. What makes the "D" chord? If we look at the scale for "D" we see that the first, third, and fifth notes of the scale are D, Gb (or F#) and A. The chord you learned did not include the lowest string because "E" is not the first third, or fifth note of the scale of D. The chord you played looked like this (A,D,A,D,F#):
